The thing about the WTS is that it has NOTHING TO OFFER other than authoritarianism. That's all it really is anymore. They've painted themselves into a corner where liberalization is impossible - because the religion itself is so utterly dry and lifeless, that without the fear and threats and the claims of AUTHORITAHHHH, why would ANYONE continue with that drudgery?

Mormons getting hollowed out: The tipping point has occurred.
by Qcmbr inever since mitt romney turned the spotlight on the lds church a growing tsunami of disaffection has been accelerated and brought to a head.. the lds core faithful members are leaving in increasing numbers such that growth has not simply stagnated in the west but it has actively reversed.
to their credit the church is responding aggressively but not only is it too late, it is an impossible task.
you can only paint sh*t so many ways.

As of this moment I haven’t left, but every once in a while my mind reverts back to the “what if it IS true” state.
So, let's say that, you know, it's da troof or something.
What, then, are we to expect? Kinda stating something similar to what I've said in other threads here, but - are fireballs going to just suddenly start raining down from the sky, wiping out civilization and every man, woman, and child on the earth except JWs? Or will giant cracks open up in the earth, swallowing people alive? Again, everybody except JWs?
Think about what THE TRUTH means, according to JWism. It's horrible! And it's a ridiculous fantasy.
Don't let 'em scare ya. Scaring people is their stock-in-trade, and millions of people dying will never live because of their stupid self-deluded bullshit.

Science is Biased?
by enigma1863 ini need some help fleshing out an illustration that explains how people can be biased but still reach honest conclusions.
i had jws claim that "evolutionists" are biased towards evolution.
if they were biased towards something else they'd reach different conclusions.

Well of course there is such a thing as confirmation bias, which scientists or anybody else could be guilty of. JWs are probably the most guilty of it of all people - virtually EVERYTHING proves that they have da twoof, in one way or another.
It's easy though, to just dismiss evolution as a "wanting to believe" on the part of those who have accepted it as fact. You're pretty much throwing boatloads, truckloads, of people under the bus as being intellectually dishonest.
In the insular minds of JWs, "scientists" are just this vague, faceless crowd of people that don't really matter cuz they don't know jeehooby. I think that those are the sort of barriers that you have to work through with JWs, if you can. Scientists are living, breathing individuals, who eat, sleep, read, marry, have kids, do the same things that a lot of JWs do, but unlike JWs, they rely on observation and evidence to arrive at truth, not an unending stream of propaganda from a central body that tells them what to think and dares them to disobey. And there's boatloads, truckloads of evidence to support evolution.

What would you tell someone who wants to become a JW?
by slimboyfat inwhat would be the most important things you think someone should be aware about jws if they are planning on getting baptised as a jw?
imagine you are on a plane and get talking to the person next to you.
you find out they are considering becoming a jw but they are not sure.

I'd just try to have as relaxed a conversation with them as I could. I'd ask them what they find attractive about the JWs, and try to make some points that not all is as it may seem on the surface. I'd tell them to take it really slow, and be sure to look into what critics of the WTS have to say.

JULY 15th Study Watchtower - NEW LIGHT IS FANTASY
by The Searcher inthe july 15 study watchtower uses all 4 study articles to try to inculcate into every witnesses' mind that the governing body is indisputably god's sole channel of communication on earth.
to do so, it uses a multitude of scriptures along with seriously flawed un-inspired reasoning.
the foundation stone of this watchtower's blatant agenda is the claim that when jesus used only a few to dispense the physical food to the many, he was setting a principle which would be applied to the distribution of spiritual food after he returned to heaven.

There was a great series on engadget recently about the rise of iTunes and its impact on the music industry.
The 3rd (and final) article in the series contrasted the record company marketing machine/big fancy studios/long term contracts/relatively few artists given the backing needed to be heard by a wide audience model that was in play for decades, vs. now, where, as one poster noted, THERE ARE SO MANY GREAT BANDS! Oy. Like 55 trillion billion of them at last count, because the barriers to getting your music out there for public consumption have been lowered to where almost anyone with a computer can do it. The result? IMO, a un-navigable sea of mediocrity, with an endless stream of here-today-forgotten-tomorrow bands and musicians. The irony is that, in spite of the lowered barriers, music, in the sense of it being a long-term, viable career path, is as difficult to attain as ever.
I've often thought that Pearl Jam was/is the last great rock band. The digital revolution has shut the door on the idea of the larger-than-life, multi-album, long-career band.
From the article:
So it's the promised land for musicians, right? Not exactly. For many creators whose careers span the before-and-after of digital music, there is a crushing sense that the grass isn't greener after all.
[...]
Easy distribution into digital channels creates a cacophony of music noise, making it harder for any artist or band to be heard.
[...]
Technology companies have made music more democratic, without question. From a distance, it looks like the hallowed "level playing field" that new media is famous for. But close up, the level field might seem like an arid desert where musicians can trudge forever without getting anywhere.
[...]
Today's economics assign a far lower value to a stream than to a download or CD sale. Krukowski calculated that for one of his records, it would take 312,000 Pandora plays to earn one album sale.
[...]
"When audience becomes artist, the result is shit," Keen said. "New enabling technology destroys both art and art commerce. Consumers lose."

Sad to hear it. I'm just astounded whenever I hear of any adult person being attracted to JWism. The members still put on a pretty good show i guess.

the watchtower bible and tract society has no interest in an effective evangelical program of conversion.. .

An actual full-frontal presentation of the weirdness behind JW thinking would kill the vague persona of citizen do-gooders who clean up after themselves at conventions.
hahahahhaha - that cracked me up.
One thing that you become cognitive-dissonancingly aware of, if you're a JW capable of any reasonable, realistic assessment of the impact of the Preaching Work™, is that nobody knows anything about JWs, and nobody cares.
So you either delude yourself into believing what the quintessentially self-deluded octegenarians in Brooklyn do - that JWs are FRONT AND CENTER in the minds of most people (lulz), or else tell yourself that Jeehoovy is only looking for sheep and everybody has been blinded by satan, yadda yadda. It takes a very insular mind to keep that sh1t propped up for so long.
